Myriam Bennouna

She was born in Morocco, but Paris was the city she chose to study architecture at Ecole Speciale D’Architecture in Raspail and take her first steps in the field. Before returning to her hometown, she lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Myriam stayed a decade outside Morocco to discover other cultures and traditions; to absorb the world she wants to pass on to her projects.

At the age of 28, she founded an architectural practice, Myriam Bennouna Architect, in Morocco, and for three years, she worked on large projects but lacked a creative stimulus that she could not find in mass projects. Cultures, stories, and people are at the heart of Myriam’s work, and Lisbon is the city giving her all of that. Creating an eclectic atmosphere mixing cultures and designs are the motto for Myriam’s work, as well as creating a bridge between interiors and crafts.

A STUDIO, SHOWROOM AND GALLERY

Rua de SaÞo Bento, in Lisbon, has a new address to keep in mind: number 398. Beijmat Studio is a showroom, a studio, a place where ideas can flow and take shape. In this space, Myriam Bennouna, an architect by training, has established a bridge between handicraft and contemporary design lines.

Here we find pieces from three international brands in line with Myriam’s vision, which are from Italy, Denmark and Japan. Alongside these marvels of design, there are Zellige tiles, Mrirt rugs and vintage Moroccan objects, such as ceramics. Also, unique custom furniture pieces designed by her.

Influenced by the arts, Beijmat Studio aims to bring objects to add authenticity and beauty to our lives, seeking and curating elements that unite the beauty of traditional craft techniques to noble materials through unique features.

The result? A harmonious space that unites tradition and contemporaneity, which come together with Myriam’s vision. “My style is a blend of contemporary with traditional splashes. There are very contemporary pieces here that I can pair with a vintage lamp or handmade rugs from Morocco.” Travelling showed her the world, but at the same time, it is what makes Myriam return to her roots whenever matching the project and clients.
